To Celebrate National
Homebrew Day with a Really Big Brew
On Saturday, May 5th local Brewmaster Todd Marcus and local homebrew club, the Cape Cod Lager and Ale Makers (CCLAMs) will celebrate the 13th anniversary of National Homebrew Day and the 4th annual American Homebrew Association’s “Big Brew” together at the Hyannisport Brewing Company – the Hyport.
In 1988 Congress officially recognized National Homebrew Day and in 1997 the American Homebrew Association (AHA) decided to celebrate by promoting “Big Brew” – a day of worldwide simultaneous brewing.
For “Big Brew 2001” the AHA has offered up three styles and recipes from which to choose. A light Classic American Pilsner, a smooth Cream Ale, or a hoppy American Brown Ale. Todd and the CCLAMs have decided on the medium-bodied, strongly-flavored, hoppy American Brown Ale. Commercial examples of this style include the original Pete’s Wicked Ale, and Brooklyn Brown Ale. Last year for “Big Brew 2000” the CCLAMs brewed 5 gallon batches, in the rain, under a tent in the parking lot of the Hyport. This year Todd has offered to bring the brew in out of the rain and let the CCLAMs brew on the full-scale brewery at the Hyport capable of producing over 200 gallons at a time. Aside from a passion for beer that led him to brewing beer professionally, Todd Marcus is also the owner of a local homebrew supply company, and ongoing sponsor of the CCLAMs monthly meetings.
Todd feels that the resurrection of good locally craft brewed beer in this country would never have been successful without the support of the all of the homebrewers who help to keep the craft alive in their own homes. “We’re excited about the prospect of brewing with Todd on the Hyport’s equipment,” said Horst Genten, president of the CCLAMs. “We all enjoy Todd’s beer and the opportunity to brew together on a large scale should be both educational and a lot of fun!” Chuck Kipnes, General Manager/Owner of the Hyannisport Brewing Company, adds, “It’s a great thing – this group is made up of serious beer drinkers and loyal customers – I hope they have a good time.” Guests are welcome to join the festivities throughout the day, though only active members will be allowed to participate in the brewing process. Everyone is welcome to come watch.
The Hyannisport Brewing Company is a restaurant/brewery located at 720 Main Street in Hyannis. Open year round from 11:30 AM to 1:00 AM and serving a full menu until midnight the Hyport offers live entertainment, a childrens menu, a private function room, and take-out.
